Band Personnel
La Familia Son is comprised of the following talented musicians:
Violeta Arroyo (Lead Vocals)  Violeta grew up singing with the Cenzontle Mexican Art Center San Pablo, CA.  She  recorded numerous cds with the performing group, “Los Cenzontles”, including a grammy nominated one with Lalo Guerrero.  She currently sings with “Montuno Groove” and bring a tremendous range of musicality from Son Cubano, to Mexican Son Jarocho , rancheras, mariachi and boleros.

Lina Luna
(Lead Vocals) Lena sings with various Bay Area groups including Rumbache and Son Borikua.  She brings knowledge of Puerto Rican musical folklore to the group as well as her swinging talents as a Pregonera.



Roberto Medina
  (Bongo and Co-Director) Roberto has been playing music in the Bay Area for the past 20 years.   He is originally from Gary, Indiana but has lived in the Bay Area for over thirty years most of  it in San Francisco's Mission District.  Here he was influenced by his close friends and Bay Area greats Louis Romero, John Calloway and Greg Landau and Ito Carrillo,  presently he resides in Oakland  where he works as a registered nurse at Highland Hospital.



Sylvia Sherman
(Congas and Co-Director)  Sylvia has been playing music in the Bay Area for the past 10 years.  She has had the opportunity to study with master Cuban percussionists including Miguel “Anga” Diaz and members of Los Munequitos de Matanzas among others.  She has performed with various bands including Caña Brava, Salsongo, and Dulce Mambo.  Sylvia works at La Peña Cultural Center in grant writing and special events production.




Raul Perales
(Bass) Raul has hit the Bay Area music scene with a storm, becoming a much sought after player and a prolific composer.  Trained through music workshops in Oakland public schools, La Peña Cultural Center and the Jazz School, Raul is a versatile player with a range from Cuban music to gospel to hip hop.   He currently plays with Rumbache, and several other groups and teaches “The Lab:  a Live Hip Hop Ensemble” at La Peña Cultural Center.

Isaac Peña
(Trumpet & Background Vocals)  Isaac is an accomplished trumpet player and songwriter.  He currently also plays with Agua Libre (formerly O-Maya) and directs is own Latin Alternative project.  Isaac sings background vocals in addition to playing trumpet and hand percussion.


Sekou Heath
(Tres guitar)  Sekou plays percussion and Tres, has performed locally and internationally, and has performed and recorded with diverse legendary Latin and Jazz artists such as, Chocolate (Alfredo Armenteros ), Cachao (Israel Lopez), Johnny Pacheco, on Peter Apfelbaum's Grammy award nominated CD, Signs of Life, and on Philip Kaufman's major motion picture, Henry and June.
